Waffles with Caramel Sauce
For the Caramel Sauce:
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/3 cup water
1 1/4 cups heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- Dissolve sugar in water over med heat. Cook the sugar until it starts changing color - do not stir, otherwise crystals will form on the side of the pan and the caramel sauce will not be as smooth.
- Once the the sugar turns golden, add heavy cream. Stir until the cream and dissolved sugar combine (this may take a few minutes).
- Turn off the heat and add vanilla.
- Let caramel sauce cool and keep it stored in the fridge.
For the Waffles:
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon yeast
pinch of salt
2 cups milk
1 large egg
- Combine, 1/2 cup flour, sugar, yeast, and 1/2 cup milk. Let mixture stand until for 10-20 minutes (or until the yeast begins to divide).
- Add remaining flour and milk along with the salt. Mix and cover with plastic wrap. Let dough rise overnight.
- In the morning, preheat oven to 200F and turn on the waffle maker.
- Add melted butter and egg to the dough.
- Cook waffles until the steam stops pouring out of the waffle iron. Keep waffles warm and crispy in the preheated oven.
- Serve with butter and homemade caramel sauce.
